Throughout our lives, role models are integral to shaping our perspectives, opinions, and even our behaviours. For many, having a role model that they admire, can relate to, and aspire to emulate, can be an incredibly positive and motivating thing. Both adults and children are impressionable beings and whether we know it or not, are always (to some degree) under the influence of those around us – for good or bad.
In light of Movember, this article focuses particularly on what makes a positive male role model for men and boys, as well as highlight their importance.
Male role models don’t have to be individuals you know personally. While many people find inspiration in a father, father figure, or another male relative whom they admire, role models can also be public figures, leaders, or even friends and colleagues. Essentially, a role model can be anyone who embodies qualities you hope to develop in yourself. The characteristics that define a role model may vary based on your personal goals and aspirations. Still, there are a few universally recognised traits that positive male role models often possess. They are:
Harmful stereotypes surrounding masculinity can often lead males to struggle with processing and understanding their own emotions, making it challenging for them to identify and articulate what they’re feeling. This can create barriers, which often prevent them from seeking help when their mental health is suffering.
Having a male role model who openly demonstrates healthy emotional expression can be invaluable. These role models can provide a powerful example of both vulnerability and strength, showing that it is not only acceptable but also courageous to share feelings, manage them in healthy ways, and to seek help when it’s needed. By observing this behaviour, boys and men may feel more empowered and inclined to voice their own struggles and seek support.
Male role models can also provide guidance and support. They can encourage the pursuit of goals and celebrate achievements, too. Beyond emotional support, positive male role models can offer practical assistance in specific situations. For example, if you encounter a challenging task at work, a male mentor might step in to share their insights and strategies for tackling similar issues. By taking you through their approach, they can help you to develop your own skills and confidence, guiding you to handle future challenges more effectively, and reinforcing the importance of supportive relationships in personal and professional growth.
Teaching boys to be respectful from a young age is incredibly important, and positive male role models can play a vital role here. By modelling respectful behaviour, role models demonstrate how to treat others with kindness and consideration, creating an environment where everyone feels valued and heard. This may involve showing boys how to listen and appreciate different perspectives, which, enhances their personal relationships, and supports in promoting a culture of equality and understanding in society overall.
Healthy masculinity represents a positive expression of what it means to be male, emphasising traits such as supportiveness, emotional awareness, personal growth, and the rejection of toxic masculinity. Toxic masculinity, on the other hand, refers to harmful and outdated beliefs and behaviours, often deeply rooted in traditional male roles, which can reinforce negative stereotypes with an emphasis on power and dominance.
A positive male role model can demonstrate healthy masculinity by showing that strength can coexist with vulnerability and compassion, for example. By showing these values, they can help to dismantle toxic masculinity, encouraging younger boys and men to embrace an alternative mindset.
It’s important to have role models from various backgrounds, ethnicities, and professions. This diversity helps boys and men see a broader range of possibilities and understand that success and positive traits are not confined to a single type of person. Diverse role models can further help to break down stereotypes and show that anyone, regardless of their background, can embody qualities such as kindness, ambition, and respect. By seeing themselves reflected in a variety of role models, boys and men of all ages can feel more included and inspired to pursue their own unique paths.
Parents play a primary role in shaping their children’s understanding of what it means to be a man. Fathers and father figures can model positive behaviours and attitudes, demonstrating that it’s okay to express emotions, seek help, and show vulnerability. They can also teach respect for others and the importance of healthy relationships. By actively engaging in their children’s lives, parents can provide the guidance and support needed to navigate the challenges of growing up. Encouraging open communication and being present in their children’s lives can build a strong foundation for emotional and mental wellbeing.
