The Modern Families Index 2019

The Modern Families Index is the most comprehensive study of how working parents manage the balance between work and family life in the UK. Now in its seventh year, it has been published annually by Working Families and Bright Horizons Family Solutions since 2012.

The Index provides a snapshot into the lives of 2,750 working families across the UK. Evidence from this year's study found that:

• 76% of couple households have both parents working full-time.
• 86% of parents want to work flexibly but only 49% do.
• Nearly half (47%) of parents said that work restricts their ability to spend time with their children, 48% said it affects their relationships and 28% said it led to arguments.
• For parents who work part-time, for majority of whom are mothers, only 21% have a chance of being promoted compared to their full-time counterpart.
